Born in Kingstree, South Carolina, the son of sharecroppers, Dr. Tisdale's journey from rural South Carolina to the college presidency reflects the transformative power of education, perseverance, and purposeful leadership. A 1965 magna cum laude graduate of Claflin University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, he earned a Master of Education degree from Temple University in 1967 and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in mathematics from Dartmouth College in 1975 and 1978, respectively. He became the first African American to earn a doctorate in mathematics from Dartmouth College.
Dr. Tisdale began his professional career as a mathematics teacher in the Philadelphia public schools before joining Delaware State University in 1969. During his 25-year tenure at Delaware State, he advanced through faculty and administrative leadership positions, ultimately serving as Senior Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs. These experiences helped shape his understanding of academic leadership, institutional governance, and the critical relationship between educational opportunity and institutional excellence.
In 1994, Dr. Tisdale returned to his alma mater as the eighth president of Claflin University. Under his leadership, Claflin underwent a far-reaching transformation that strengthened its academic reputation, expanded educational opportunities, enhanced student success, revitalized its physical campus, and elevated its national visibility. His presidency was grounded in a compelling vision of institutional excellence, a commitment to valuing people, and the conviction that historically Black colleges and universities could compete successfully while remaining faithful to their distinctive missions.
Central to his leadership philosophy was the belief that institutional transformation requires more than a compelling vision. It demands strategic action, shared commitment, effective governance, the development of people, and a sustained pursuit of excellence. His administration emphasized academic innovation, leadership development, institutional advancement, and the creation of a culture in which high expectations and student achievement reinforced one another.
Following his retirement from the Claflin presidency in 2019, Dr. Tisdale has remained actively engaged in higher education as a leadership advisor, mentor, author, and keynote speaker. He works with college and university presidents, governing boards, emerging executives, and mission-driven organizations on matters involving
transformational leadership, strategic visioning, governance, institutional effectiveness, and leadership continuity.
He serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the HBCU Executive Leadership Institute at Clark Atlanta University and participates in its leadership development initiatives, including mentoring aspiring senior executives and future college and university presidents. Through this work, he continues to contribute to the preparation of a new generation of leaders equipped to navigate the increasingly complex challenges
facing higher education.
In 2025, Dr. Tisdale published Beyond the Western Wall: The Audacious Transformation of a Small Liberal Arts College, a leadership narrative chronicling Claflin University's transformation and the lessons learned from a quarter-century of presidential leadership. More than an institutional history, the book explores the importance of vision, courage, strategic decision-making, collaborative leadership, and the responsibility to build institutions capable of sustaining excellence beyond any single administration.
Today, Dr. Tisdale's leadership platform is organized around three interconnected commitments: Preparing Transformational Leaders, Moving Excellence Forward, and Sustaining Excellence Across Generations. These principles guide his writing, speaking, mentoring, and advisory work with colleges and universities, churches,
nonprofit organizations, and other mission-driven institutions. Throughout his career, Dr. Tisdale has remained grounded in the values instilled by his parents, particularly their enduring counsel to "Always treat people right." That principle continues to shape his understanding of leadership as a responsibility to serve others,
develop human potential, strengthen institutions, and create opportunities that extend beyond one's own tenure.
His guiding conviction is both simple and profound: "Leadership is about what you can move."
For Dr. Tisdale, the ultimate measure of leadership is not simply what one accomplishes while holding a position, but the people one prepares, the excellence one advances, and the enduring legacy one leaves for future generations.
