Marking the one-year anniversary of Beyond the Western Wall, this reflection series was created to revisit its core ideas through a more immediate and practical lens.
Over ten consecutive weeks, a series of reflections were shared—each offering a concise synopsis of a chapter, paired with insights shaped by lived experience in leadership, governance, and institutional change. What began as a commemorative effort evolved into something more meaningful: an ongoing conversation about purpose, perseverance, and the responsibility of leadership during times of challenge and transformation.
This collection, offered without cost, brings those reflections together in one place. While each entry stands on its own, together they form a connected journey through the central themes of the work: student success, institutional integrity, visionary leadership, and the discipline required to move beyond perceived limitations.
-
How transformation in institutions is intentional—not accidental
-
The role of strategic vision and measurable planning
-
Why raising standards requires courage and alignment
-
The importance of president–board partnership in governance
-
A sustained and unapologetic focus on student success
-
The discipline required to maintain momentum over time
Institutions do not transform simply because circumstances change. They transform because leaders—and the communities they serve—decide they will.
This series is not just a reflection on one presidency or one institution. It is an examination of what becomes possible when leadership is aligned with mission, governance is engaged, and a community commits to excellence.
At its core, this work asks a central question:
How do we lead with clarity, conviction, transparency, and a commitment to lifting others as we advance?
-
Read one reflection at a time or move through them collectively
-
Consider how each theme applies to your own leadership context
-
Revisit sections as your perspective evolves
-
Use the reflections as prompts for discussion, planning, or personal insight
This reflection series is drawn from Beyond the Western Wall: Audacious Transformation of a Small Liberal Arts College, a work centered on the realities of leading change in higher education.
It speaks to presidents, trustees, administrators, and emerging leaders committed to advancing institutions with purpose and discipline.
