Marking the one-year anniversary of Beyond the Western Wall, this reflection series revisits its core ideas through a more immediate and practical lens.
Over ten consecutive weeks, a series of reflections was shared—each offering a concise synopsis of a chapter, paired with insights shaped by lived experience in leadership, governance, and institutional change. What began as a commemorative effort evolved into something more meaningful: an ongoing conversation about purpose, perseverance, and the responsibility of leadership during times of challenge and transformation.
This collection, offered without cost, brings those reflections together in one place. While each entry stands on its own, collectively they form a cohesive journey through the central themes of the work: student success, institutional integrity, visionary leadership, and the discipline required to move beyond perceived limitations.
-
The intentional nature of institutional transformation
-
The role of strategic vision grounded in measurable planning
-
The courage and alignment required to raise standards
-
The importance of strong president–board partnerships in governance
-
A sustained, unapologetic focus on student success
-
The discipline necessary to build and maintain momentum over time
Institutions do not transform simply because circumstances change. They transform because leaders, and the communities they serve, make a deliberate decision to do so.
This series extends beyond any single presidency or institution. It offers a broader examination of what becomes possible when leadership is aligned with mission, governance is engaged, and a community commits to excellence.
At its core, this work asks a central question:
How do we lead with clarity, conviction, transparency, and a commitment to lifting others as we advance?
-

-

This reflection series is drawn from Beyond the Western Wall: Audacious Transformation of a Small Liberal Arts College, a work grounded in the realities of leading change in higher education.
It speaks to presidents, trustees, administrators, and emerging leaders committed to advancing institutions and other organizations with purpose, clarity, and discipline.
